MOTORCYCLE SEAT RECOVERING
Motorcycle Seat Recovering and Repair
From a simple repair or replacement cover to a fully custom seat build, Alpha handles motorcycle, bike and trike seat work for every type of machine and every individual requirement.
Motorcycle & Tryke Seat Recovering & REPAIRS
The seat is the most tactile surface on any bike or trike and it takes more physical stress than almost any other component of the vehicle.
A worn motorcycle seat lets down an otherwise immaculate machine. UV exposure, wet weather, the constant friction of use and the passage of time all take their toll, and once a seat starts to crack, fade or delaminate it tends to deteriorate quickly.
We recover motorcycle and bike seats from our Holmfirth workshop, working on everything from classic British singles and twins to contemporary sports bikes, touring machines, trikes and custom builds. Whether you want something completely different or simply require a replacement cover or a repair, we can meet your individual requirements. Seat work is a specialism within a specialism; the materials used, the way the cover is secured and the shaping of the foam are all quite different from car seat work, and getting it right requires specific experience.
MOTORBIKE Seat Recovering
A straightforward seat recover involves removing the old cover, inspecting the foam and base plate, and making a new cover in the appropriate material. We trim motorcycle and bike seats in leather, vinyl and saddle leather depending on the application and the customer’s preference.
Vinyl is the traditional choice for motorcycle and bike seats and the most practical for most applications. It’s weather-resistant, hard-wearing and available in an enormous range of colours and textures. The quality of vinyl varies enormously, and we use commercial-grade automotive materials rather than the thinner, cheaper alternatives that some suppliers offer.
Leather and saddle leather seat covers look exceptional on the right bike or trike, particularly classic machines and custom builds where the aesthetic demands a premium finish. Leather is more maintenance-intensive than vinyl on a motorcycle given the exposure to weather, but for a showpiece or weekend bike it’s a compelling choice.
For custom builds and bespoke projects we can source specialist materials including perforated leathers, two-tone combinations, contrasting piping and embossed or embroidered details. We also do creative tooling and airbrush work for customers looking for something genuinely individual.
MOTORCYCLE SEAT Foam Reshaping and Repair
The foam inside a motorcycle or bike seat is often as much of a problem as the cover itself. Old foam compresses permanently over time, losing the support and shaping that makes a seat comfortable. On vintage and classic bikes the original foam may have deteriorated to the point where it crumbles when the cover is removed.
We replace and reshape foam as part of the seat recovery process where required. We can match the original profile for a restoration project, or modify the shape to suit the customer’s preference. Comfort alterations are common, particularly on long-distance touring bikes and trikes where customers want to lower the seat height, increase the support in specific areas, or build a gel insert into a particularly demanding seating position.
Gel inserts are an excellent addition for riders who cover significant distances. We fit specialist motorcycle seat gel pads within the foam layer, which distributes pressure more evenly over long periods of riding. The finished cover then goes over the complete assembly and the gel is completely invisible in the finished seat.
Classic and Vintage Bike Seats
Classic motorcycle and bike seat restoration has its own set of requirements. Many original seat covers used vinyl in specific textures and patterns that aren’t available off the shelf today. Where we can source a close match to an original specification we will. Where we can’t, we’re honest about that and discuss alternative approaches with the customer.
Seat profiles on older British and European bikes often have complex compound curves that require careful pattern-making and fitting technique. We take the time to get the profile right before the cover goes on, because a seat that fits the frame and the rider properly is as important aesthetically as the material choice.
Getting Your Seat Recovered
Most motorcycle, bike and trike seat recovery jobs can be completed without the machine needing to visit us at all. You can remove the seat, bring it to our workshop in New Mill, Holmfirth, and collect it once the work is complete. This makes the service straightforward for customers from across Yorkshire and beyond, since posting or transporting a seat is much simpler than moving an entire motorcycle or trike.
For more complex work involving frame-off assessment or significant foam rebuilding we may want to see the machine in situ, but we’ll let you know that at the outset.
