CLASSIC CAR RESTORATION
Classic Car Interior Restoration
When you commission a classic interior restoration with Alpha, we match the materials, finishes and techniques used when the car was first built.
Classic Car Interior Restoration
Classic car restoration is where this craft gets genuinely demanding.
The margins are tighter, the expectations are higher, and the research required to get things authentically right can take as long as the trimming itself. We embrace that. Restoring a classic interior properly requires a combination of traditional skills, meticulous attention to original specifications and the kind of patience that modern production trimming doesn’t always develop.
We’ve restored the interiors of classic and vintage vehicles across the full spectrum — from 1918 Stanley steamers and pre-war coachbuilts to classic E-Type Jaguars, 1960s British sports cars and 1980s Italian exotica. Some of our most celebrated work has been on classic vehicles, including the stunning builds that earned us our television appearances on Supercar Megabuild and Goblin Works Garage.
Techniques and Craft
Traditional interior trimming uses techniques that have changed little in decades. Hand-stitching, piping, pleating and the careful manipulation of leather over complex shapes all require physical skill that comes from years of practice. Old worn out seats can be reconstructed, springs and foams replaced and re-covered to restore them to their former glory. We approach every element — from a fluted leather centre panel to a complete remake of a hood or tonneau cover — the way it was originally done, not the way that’s quickest.
We set piping by hand. We stitch by machine where it makes sense and by hand where the access or the finish demands it. We stretch leather over foam and board in the traditional manner, producing an interior that doesn’t just look right from a distance; it bears close examination.
Hood re-fitting follows the same principles. We’ve replaced and refitted hoods on a wide range of convertibles and roadsters, using correct materials cut and fitted to the original pattern.
Period-Correct Materials
Getting a classic restoration right means using the correct materials, not just materials that look approximately right. When a customer commissions an interior refurbishment with Alpha, we always endeavour to match the materials and finishes used when the car was produced. We source traditional hides, Bedford cord, Connolly-type leather and authentic wool carpets where the vehicle demands them. We have relationships with specialist suppliers who carry period materials and who understand the difference between a hide that’s historically accurate and one that merely resembles it.
Colour matching matters equally. The original colour specification for a classic car interior is often well-documented, but finding a current source for that colour in an appropriate material takes research. We do that research rather than defaulting to the nearest contemporary equivalent.
Where a customer wants an enhanced version of the original rather than a strict concours restoration, we can work with upgraded materials that retain the period aesthetic while offering better durability or a more refined feel. Many classic car owners want their cars driven and enjoyed rather than preserved under a cover, and that changes the material conversation somewhat.
Vehicles We’ve Worked On
Our gallery tells part of this story. We’ve trimmed the interiors of AC Cobras, Alfa Romeos, Aston Martins, DeLoreans, Ferraris, Jaguars, Lancias, Lotus cars, Triumph sports cars and many others. Every marque brings its own particular challenges and its own authentic character that the interior needs to reflect.
Classic Land Rover and Range Rover interiors are another area of strength for us. The workmanship inside an original Series Land Rover or early Range Rover was functional rather than luxurious, but restoring it properly is a specific skill. We’ve done enough of them to understand exactly what’s required.
We treat every classic restoration with the same level of investment, whether the vehicle is heading to a concours show or going back into regular use on the road.
What the process looks like
Conversation & consultation
Every job starts with a conversation. You bring the vehicle to us (or we arrange collection in some cases), we assess the existing interior and discuss exactly what you’re looking for. We’ll show you material samples, talk through colour combinations and give you an honest view of what will work and what won’t. Once you’re happy with the plan, we get started.
Strip and prepare
Seats come out, panels come off, and we work methodically through each component. Nothing is rushed and nothing is skipped. Each part of the interior is assessed before any new material goes near it.
Cut, stitch and trim
Patterns are cut, materials are prepared and each piece is trimmed, stitched and fitted with care. We use industrial-grade machinery for cutting and stitching, but a huge amount of the work is still done by hand. That’s where the experience shows.
Fit and inspect
Fitting is where attention to detail becomes critical. A retrim lives or dies on the tension of the leather across a seat cushion, the precision of a stitch line, the way a panel fits flush against a door without gaps or creases. This team has been doing this long enough to know what good looks like and won’t accept anything less.
