STEERING WHEEL RETRIMMING
Specialist Steering Wheel Retrim & Repair
From a straightforward leather retrim to a fully custom two-tone Alcantara finish, Alpha handles steering wheel retrimming for every type of vehicle and every individual requirement.
Steering Wheel Retrim
The steering wheel is the most handled surface in any car. You touch it every time you drive, you look at it constantly and it sets the tone for the entire interior.
A worn, cracked or peeling steering wheel makes even an otherwise well-maintained interior feel tired and neglected. A properly retrimmed wheel, finished in the right material with clean stitching and a comfortable grip, changes the driving experience immediately and noticeably.
We retrim steering wheels from our Holmfirth workshop, working on everything from modern performance cars and prestige vehicles to classic and vintage machines. Whether your wheel has seen better days or you simply want to upgrade the factory finish to something more personal, we can meet your requirements.
Steering wheel retrim Materials
Leather is the most popular choice for steering wheel retrimming and for good reason. It’s comfortable to grip, ages well with proper care and looks correct in almost any interior. We use quality hides appropriate to the vehicle and the customer’s budget, and we can match or complement existing interior leather where colour consistency matters.
Alcantara has become increasingly popular, particularly on performance and track-focused cars. The suede-like texture provides an excellent grip surface, looks striking in darker colours and photographs beautifully. It’s the material of choice for many factory sport and RS-specification interiors, and a well-executed Alcantara retrim is indistinguishable from a factory finish. We use genuine Alcantara rather than cheaper imitations, which is a distinction that matters over time.
Two-tone combinations — leather and Alcantara being the most common pairing — allow for a more individual result. A contrasting centre stripe, a coloured stitch line or a different material on the grip sections can transform a standard wheel into something genuinely distinctive. We discuss these options during the consultation and can show you examples of previous work to help inform the decision.
Stitching and Detail
Stitching is where a steering wheel retrim either looks professional or gives itself away. The stitch line needs to be consistent, properly tensioned and positioned correctly across the seam. We stitch by hand, which allows us to work around the compound curves of a steering wheel accurately and produce a finish that holds up under daily use.
Contrast stitching in a colour that picks up a detail from elsewhere in the interior is one of the most effective ways to personalise a wheel without it looking out of place. We can match an existing stitch colour from the seats or door cards, or introduce a new accent colour that ties the interior together.
Wheel Condition and Preparation
Before any new material goes on, the existing cover needs to come off cleanly and the wheel assessed underneath. Older wheels can have degraded foam or a damaged grip profile that needs attention before retrimming. We carry out any necessary preparation work as part of the retrim process so the finished result sits correctly and feels right in the hand.
Some factory wheels have airbag housings, switches or paddle shifters integrated into the hub or spokes. We work carefully around these components, ensuring the retrim doesn’t interfere with any safety or functional elements. If there are any concerns about a particular wheel’s construction we’ll discuss them with you before starting work.
STEERING WHEEL RETRIM TO MATCH Your Interior
A steering wheel retrim produces the best results when it’s considered as part of the wider interior rather than in isolation. Customers who come to us for a full re-trim will often have the wheel done at the same time, allowing us to use the same hide, the same stitch colour and the same finish across every surface. The result is a cohesive interior that looks designed rather than assembled from separate decisions.
Even if you’re only having the wheel done, we’ll ask about the rest of your interior so we can make sure the material and colour choices complement what’s already there rather than fighting with it.

Steering wheel retrimming is more cost-effective than you might think,
but the cost varies depending on the material chosen, the complexity
of the wheel and whether any preparation work is required underneath.
We’d rather have a proper conversation about your specific wheel and
interior than have you work from an assumption.
