How a Starlight Headliner Works
A starlight headliner uses a fibre optic light engine housed discreetly within the headlining structure, feeding hundreds of individually positioned optical fibres through the headliner fabric. Each fibre terminates at the surface of the headliner with a small light point. We use a combination of fibre thicknesses to create a realistic near and far effect, and the fibres are distributed by hand, one at a time, to ensure each constellation is completely unique rather than a regular pattern.
The light engine uses LED technology, which runs cool, consumes minimal power and has an extremely long service life. Installation involves removing the existing headliner, fitting the fibres through the fabric and routing the light engine into a concealed location within the headlining structure. In most vehicles this sits within the sunroof housing area or behind the rear interior panel, invisible from the cabin. We can install fibre optic stars into your existing headlining or recover the headlining with leather, suede or fabric. We have also made custom panels to suit campervans or where no suitable ceiling currently exists.
Options and Configurations
You can choose between white and colour-changing stars, twinkling effects, shooting stars and even firework effects. The lights are fully adjustable, so you can select anything from a bright intense light to a subtle glow depending on your mood.
A static starfield is the most classic option: hundreds of fixed light points spread across the ceiling, some brighter than others to create depth and realism. This is the configuration closest to the Rolls-Royce Bespoke Starlight headliner that many people will have seen and that set the benchmark for the concept.
Shooting star effects add movement to the display. Programmed into the light engine, a small number of fibres are activated in sequence to create the impression of a star travelling briefly across the sky. The frequency and pattern can be configured, and in our experience this addition genuinely elevates the experience.
RGB colour-change configurations use a multi-colour light engine to allow the star colour to shift across the spectrum. Some customers use this to create an ambient lighting effect that ties into the wider interior mood lighting. Others simply enjoy the option to change the character of the headliner to suit their mood or setting.
Fibre density is another variable. We discuss the appropriate fibre count for your vehicle during the consultation, as this affects both the intensity of the effect and the time required for installation. A higher density creates a richer, more immersive sky but requires considerably more installation time.

Sunroof apertures present an additional design consideration and something we manage regularly. Vehicles with panoramic roofs require the installation to work around the aperture and seal correctly once the headliner is refitted.

What a starlight headliner costs
A starlight headliner is priced on the roof it is going into. The two things that move the figure most are the size and shape of that roof and how many fibres you want in it.
A small coupe roof is a very different job to a panoramic saloon or a campervan. Sunroof apertures, grab handles, pillars and rear quarters all have to be worked around. A headliner that has to come out and be recovered in suede or Alcantara is more work than one that does not.
Then there is the effect itself. Fibre count is the obvious one, but shooting stars, twinkle and colour change all add to it, and a mapped constellation takes longer to set out than a scattered night sky. Running the controller and the loom neatly out of sight is part of the job as well.
